Hurricane Katrina makes landfall on this day in 2005,killing at least 1,836 people and causing $81 billion in property damage after levees break. The total lack of preparedness, especially in terms of caring for the aged, the young, and minorities in New Orleans, was a lasting mark of disgrace on the Bush Administration and a strong indicator that the Republican philosophy of ignoring the poor had a serious downside.
