Worst UK coal disaster takes place at in Senghenydd Colliery in Wales on this day in 1913 when 439 workers are killed in a methane explosion. The was not the world’s worst coal mining disaster. That distinction goes to the Benxihu Colliery accident in China on April 26, 1942, which killed 1,549 miners. The worst in Europe was the Courrières mine disaster of March 10, 1906, in which 1,099 miners were killed.
