¶ Dymaxion car Blueprints for the 1933 Dymaxion car designed by Buckminster Fuller showed up in a Massachusetts recently. The car was far ahead of its time but a fatal accident on a test site stalled development. Although widely celebrated for his innovative ideas, Fuller was not much of an automotive engineer, according to Smithsonian magazine.

Water Pollution Conference of 1921 The US Department of Commerce holds a conference on this day in 1921 to consider “the subject of water pollution and its relation to the fisheries.” According to a conference report: “There was indicated a practically unanimous demand on the part of the states for assistance from the federal government." Oil discharge from tankers and refineries was “the most vital problem” affecting fisheries, the conference members said in a final resolution. Around the same time, the US Corps of Engineers begins an investigation of oil pollution in harbors. The discussion between state and federal officials and industry representatives “revealed a general failure of the states to cope with many important problems,” particularly oil waste, industrial waste and sewage that was threatening some varieties of migratory fish with extinction. Although there was an oil discharge bill and treaty in 1924, real regulation would not even begin until 1948.
