This Day in History: 1964-05-14

Aswan Dam opens On this day in 1964, water begins flowing through the Aswan High Dam. The floodgates were opened by Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nassar and Soviet premier Nikita Kruschev. Since the dam innundated an area of major international importance, the United Nations responded by creating World Heritage sites which, theoretically, have international protection.
