Martin County coal slurry disaster takes place this day in 2000 as 300 million gallons of coal slurry from a Massey (Alpha) mine dump into Big Sandy River in Kentucky. Investigators who find faulty with Massey are fired next year by President George Bush as a personal favor to Sen. Mitch McConnell on the day that Bush takes office.
