Hoover Dam turbines start The first of the electric turbines at the Hoover Dam goes into service on this day in 1936. The massive dam near Las Vegas was dedicated the on Sept. 30, 1935. The dam provides hydroelectric power and drinking water source for much of the southwestern U.S. and was one of the main subjects in the environmental book Cadillac Desert.
