Mapuche protest Ralco Dam A group of Mapuche Indians occupy Chile’s Indigenous Affairs Bureau and Environmental Protection Board to protest the licensing of the Ralco Dam on Chile’s Bio-Bio River on this day in 1997. The $550 million, 155-meter dam was built in an Indiginous people’s reserve. It was completed in 2004 but the Mapuche conflict goes on.

Aswan Dam opens
On this day in 1964, water begins flowing through the Aswan High Dam. The floodgates were opened by Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nassar and Soviet premier Nikita Kruschev. Since the dam innundated an area of major international importance, the United Nations responded by creating World Heritage sites which, theoretically, have international protection.

Malpasset Dam collapse A dam on the Reyran River collapses and floods Frejus, a town on the French Riviera, on this day in 1959. The dam failure killed 420 people. It had been weakened by torrential rains and by blasting in a nearby mine.

Teleco Dam completed The floodgates close on the Teleco Dam in Tennessee this day in 1979, signaling the completion of the controversial TVA project. Although some of the conflict was fought over the endangered snail darter, the real problem was the confiscation and destruction of Cherokee homelands by the federal government.
