New River dam defeated on this day in 1976. The massive hydroelectric project, proposed by the American Electric Power Co., would have created two dams with a combined height of 300 feet in a pristine NC and Va watershed. During the decades-long debate about the dam project, Congressman Ken Hechler of West Virginia compared the idea of damming the New River to “dynamiting the pyramids.”

Hoover Dam turbines start The first of the electric turbines at the Hoover Dam goes into service on this day in 1936. The massive dam near Las Vegas was dedicated the on Sept. 30, 1935. The dam provides hydroelectric power and drinking water source for much of the southwestern U.S. and was one of the main subjects in the environmental book Cadillac Desert.

Kelly Barnes Dam fails on this day in 1977 in Georgia, US, killing 39 people.

Los Angeles aqueduct is opened on this day in 1913, bringing water from the Sierra Nevada mountains 360 kilometers to the east. Headed by William Mulholland, the larger-than-life czar of L.A.’s water supply, the project beings with mule trains and bulldozers in 1908 (photo). The aqueduct fuels the enormous growth of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley during the next century and is remembered today as an example of engineering arrogance for its negative impact on the Owens River and the catastrophic failure of the St. Francis Dam in 1928.

Hungary abandons dam The Hungarian government abandons the Nagymoros dam project on the Danube River on this day in 1989, conceding that it entailed grave risk to the environment and the water supply of Budapest.

The Aswan High Dam is completed on the Nile River in Egypt on this day in 1970. The dam reduces annual floods, which reduces natural fertilizer and makes life harder for traditional farmers along the Nile. And the dam also inundates some ancient Egyptian structures, but the Abu Simbal temple is saved in a massive archeological engineering effort in 1964.

Banqlao Dam ruptures in the Ru River of China, killing between 90,000 and 250,000 people. The dam was built to withstand a 1,000-year typhoon, party officials said. It lasted about 20 years.
